The Tunneling
In 2049, the government can no longer keep raising road levels to match the rising water levels. Over the years, ground-level roads have become largely abandoned, leaving wasted and unused spaces and disrupting neighbourhood apartment living. Introducing "The Tunneling": a system of pathways that utilises water, finding opportunity in the areas that are no longer habitable due to the rising tides, to enhance residents' basic needs through establishing a network of communication routes and passageways.
The Tunneling features a buoyant pathway on the water surface that seeks to maintain community livelihood. Recognising that traditional ways of living have become unlivable due to the worsening effects of climate change over the past 25 years, The Tunneling reworks these modes of living to allow residents to adapt and thrive within the new water-based environment. It provides connecting, residential pathways with 'mini-bus' transportation, as well as transformable local spaces for street food vendors, students, residents, and delivery workers, helping to preserve the vibrant atmosphere of the apartment complex and the community.
Rather than seeing the rising water levels as a problem, The Tunneling brings back and improves upon the cherished elements of the past. It enables residents to maintain their established behaviours and interactions, while also meeting their evolving needs in the face of environmental challenges.
